About BSA Formulas

Du Bois Formula

The Du Bois formula is widely used and has been validated across various populations. It uses the following equation:

BSA = 0.007184 × Weight^0.425 × Height^0.725

Where weight is in kilograms and height is in centimeters.

Mosteller Formula

The Mosteller formula is popular due to its simplicity and ease of calculation:

BSA = √(Weight × Height ÷ 3600)

This simplified formula provides accurate results and is easy to calculate mentally.

Haycock Formula

The Haycock formula was developed for use in infants, children, and adults:

BSA = 0.024265 × Weight^0.5378 × Height^0.3964

This formula is particularly useful when calculating BSA for pediatric patients.

Applications

Body Surface Area is commonly used in medical settings for:

  • Determining medication dosages
  • Calculating cardiac output
  • Adjusting chemotherapy doses
  • Assessing burn surface area
  • Standardizing physiological parameters
