Understanding Golf Handicaps

A golf handicap is a measure of a golfer's potential playing ability. The higher the handicap, the poorer the golfer's ability relative to a person with a lower handicap. This system allows players of differing abilities to compete on more equal terms.

Course Rating and Slope

Course rating is typically a number between 67 and 77 that indicates the expected score for a scratch golfer. Slope rating (usually between 55 and 155) describes the relative difficulty of a course for bogey golfers compared to scratch golfers.

Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC)

The PCC is an adjustment that accounts for playing conditions affecting scoring on a given day. It ranges from -1 (easier conditions) to +3 (more difficult conditions). This adjustment helps ensure scores accurately reflect a player's ability regardless of weather or course conditions.

Calculating Your Handicap

  • Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating - Par)
  • Score Differential = (Score - Course Rating - PCC) × 113 ÷ Slope Rating
  • Handicap Index is based on the average of your lowest score differentials
